McCarthy captures Nantucket Iron event
|
NANTUCKET - Kevin McCarthy raced to victory yesterday in the 23rd annual Nantucket Iron Teams Relay.
The 33-year-old Nantucket resident covered the 21/2-mile run, nine-tenths of a mile paddle, 31/2-mile beach run, half-mile swim, 3/4-mile run, 19-mile bike ride and 61/2-mile run in 2 hours, 44 minutes and 19 seconds.
U.S. Marine captain Eric Kapitulik, racing to raise money for the children of Marines killed in a helicopter crash during training in the Persian Gulf, was third in 3:10.55.
"It was a challenging day out there,'' Kapitulik said. "I've done the Iron Man and the Eco Challenge. This was kind of a cross between them. It was a challenging event.''
Kapitulik was only 30 seconds off the lead, but struggled during the paddle.
"This is just an excuse, but (the paddle) was too small,'' he said. "It was new, and the first time I used it was in the race. It was riding about three inches under the water.''
He made up enough time during the beach run and bike to pull into third place.
Kapitulik has raised more than $50,000 for a scholarship fund for the children of his fallen comrades. He won't know how much he raised on Nantucket for at least a month, he said.
