The benefits of Organic

While there has yet to be in-depth studies or conclusive evidence to suggest that consuming organic food is safer or more nutritious than conventionally produced food, there are still many reasons to go organic.

  1. Organic farming enhances soil health and fertility. In order for an agricultural material to be considered for use in organic farming, it must be evaluated for it's long-term effects on the environment. It is not simply a question of synthetic versus natural, but a matter of the consequences on the environment and the well-being of the earth.

  2. The use of composted manure and other natural materials and practices as fertilizers instead of synthetic materials helps to protect the ground water supplies. This can help safeguard drinking water supplies in certain areas and protects the plant and animal life in many larger bodies of water.

  3. Organic produce cannot be genetically engineered, providing a choice in the marketplace. While there is still much controversy surrounding the safety of genetically engineered products, some feel it is wise to avoid it until more information has been obtained.

  4. Organically grown crops may be more nutritious than conventionally harvested produce. There is mounting evidence that certain vitamins and nutrients, such as Vitamin C, iron and magnesium, appear in greater amounts in organic fruits, vegetables and grains than in their counterparts gown using synthetic pesticides and fertilizers.

  5. Choosing organically farmed products helps to protect the next generation. Children are of special concern when it comes to exposure to chemicals and synthetic pesticides because of their high metabolisms and low body weight. By going organic, we can help minimize their contact with these substances in the soil in which they play, the air they breathe, the water they drink and the food they eat.
