[MUSIC] TOM: How you doing? I’m Tom. TOM: And I’m Tom. TOM: We’re juice guys. TOM: We’re juice guys. TOM: And ah, how do we start this thing? [MUSIC] TOM: -- Nantucket Harbor. We used to go to all these different yachts that used to be around here selling everything from ice to muffins to coffee. TOM: Lobster dinners. TOM: Lobster dinner. TOM: Do their laundry. Pump the doo-doo out of their boats. [LAUGHTER] TOM: I made the peach juice, everyone tried it [UNINTELLIGIBLE PHRASE]. You were way into it. And I don’t know whether I said God, we should bottle this. No one makes it in the United States really. T.Scott and I ended up driving to the Finest, the local supermarket there. We bought every fruit you could imagine. We bought blueberries, peaches, you know, pears, we brought peaches. Oh, did I say peaches? And I think we actually said that night, you know, we should call this stuff Nantucket Nectars. OPRAH WINFREY: [APPLAUSE] The juice guys are here, and they brought juice for everybody. Everybody’s got juice, Nantucket Nectars under your chair. Why don’t you all open up your bottles and see the personal message about Tom and Tom that’s in some caps. [LAUGHTER] Ooh, love that sound. MONTEL WILLIAMS: Please welcome Tom First and Tom Scott to the show. [APPLAUSE] Owners of Nantucket Nectar. I’ve got to say this, and I’ve read a lot of stuff about you guys, and you know what? I don’t have a lot of time, but there was a period of time when this company was going on that you didn’t think this was going to work, either of you, is that right? TOM: Our fifth year in business we actually, we never made any money, and actually lost $2 million in our fifth year. MONTEL: Fifth year. TOM: So we were about 28 years old and $2 million in the hole and it didn’t feel good. MONTEL: And during that period of time, you talked about, you run a boating business also, correct, a boat business? TOM: We ran a floating store on the water. That’s how we got into business originally. TOM: We had a business that was like a floating general store. TOM: So it was like a floating general store. TOM: We had what was a, it was like a floating store. We had a floating lemonade stand, basically, in Nantucket Harbor, which is up in Massachusetts. TOM: I was in Spain during my senior year of college and tasted a peach juice that I really liked. TOM: I was traveling in Spain my senior year in college and tasted a peach juice, which was really the ultimate inspiration to get into the beverage business. TOM: And we decided why not start making this stuff? We’ll sell it off the boat this summer. And people really enjoyed it. TOM: I think the fact that we loved creating and doing our own thing every day was the biggest inspiration to keep going, even when there were times when we thought we shouldn’t. TOM: We love our products, and we have this thing we call the Quality Juice Evolution Solution. TOM: We call it the Quality Juice Evolution Solution. TOM: Quality Juice Evolution Solution, which is we want to improve the product every year and make it better. And I think when people see what’s in our bottles, how much effort we put into it, they’ll enjoy it. But that’s sort of our passion. [MUSIC] TOM: How you doing? I’m Tom. TOM: And I’m Tom. TOM: We’re juice guys. TOM: We’re juice guys. [MUSIC] MAN: It’s not your average corporate culture here. The dress is casual and so is the attitude. At high level meetings you’ll find plenty of sneakers, sandals and T-shirts, and of course Pete the dog. TOM: If someone had a problem with the dogs here then we’d have to get rid of them, the people, not the dogs. [LAUGHTER] [END]
